U A N L – P I S I S

The Graduate Program in Systems Engineering (PISIS), in the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (FIME) at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) offers both Masters and Doctoral studies in Systems Engineering with a concentration in Operations Research (OR), that is, modeling, analyzing, and developing solution techniques to decision-making systems. OR uses quantitative tools to aid decision-making in academia, government and industry, assisting in the planning, construction,and operation of technical systems. The specialty is interdisciplinary and graduates are working in a variety of fields including teaching and research in the academy, management consulting, logistics and transportation, production planning, communications and other fields.

Length of study

It is expected that a master student completes his full-time degree program in a period of two years (four consecutive semesters). In any case the maximum period for obtaining master’s degree is three years from the date of initial entry to the program, as stipulated in Art. 89 of the UANL General Rulebook for Graduate Studies.

The expected duration for obtaining a doctoral degree is three years (in addition to the master). It is expected that the PhD student is dedicated full time to his graduate work. In any case, the maximum period set by the UANL to obtain the degree is five years from the date of admission to the doctoral program.


Regardless of the particular system to be addressed (transport, electricity, manufacturing, energy, computer, etc.), there are a common set of processes: measurement, evaluation, optimization, and decision making. The Graduate Program in Systems Engineering offers graduates of various engineering programs in the region, the opportunity to deepen these functions and adequately prepare for a multidisciplinary environment, in a setting that aims at improving the efficiency of their organization.

In developed countries, most corporations turn to experts in this field (systems, operations research, decision sciences, etc.) to solve the problems they face every day. The systems engineering expert is able to formulate, analyze and propose methodologies to assist in the solution of decision making process. To mention one example, all companies in the transport industry (air, land, sea) have their own internal department responsible for providing technical and scientific support to the very complex process of decision making. To this end, one should take into account all operations: crew allocation, transportation, freight forwarding, logistics and demand satisfaction. This support has a strong impact on the economic aspect of the business. In Mexico, our graduates are trained professionals and researchers who are able to model, analyze and solve such systems.
